Terminology and other Possible Deliverables :

  • DESIGN ENGINEERING, PRODUCT DESIGN ENGINEERING

Product design engineering is process of engineering product solution from the initial idea or initial product specification to fully functional prototype or ready for manufacturing. Product design engineering is inseparable part of Product development process. Product design engineering is tightly intertwined with mechanical design. In product development world, the product design engineering is set of mechanical design and engineering activities necessary to develop systems and subsystems of the subject product. By specialties product engineering can be divided into additional sub-categories from design and engineering of mechanisms, (design) engineering of internal components, design and engineering of electronics, design & engineering of pneumatic or hydraulic systems, and numerous other specialties. At DESIGNLORE we provide all product design and engineering services and all specialty engineering activities without explicitly dividing them according to specialties. Thus product design engineering may include for example engineering of the hydraulics together with design and engineering of electronic control systems.
  • ENGINEERING, PRODUCT ENGINEERING SERVICES

Product engineering refers to the process of designing and developing a device, assembly, or system in such way that it be produced (or mass produced) as an item for sale through some production manufacturing process. Product engineering usually involves number of various activities dealing with functionality and performance, cost, produceability feasibility, quality, reliability, serviceability etc. Product engineering includes design, development and transitioning to manufacturing of the product. The term product engineering encompasses development process from concept through design and development of its mechanical, electronics and software components. After the design and development is goes through phase of detailing the product is transitioned to manufacturing through prototyping, and various support to manufacturing engineering activities. Sometimes "Product engineers" are also called "Industrial engineers". By specialties product engineering can be divided into additional sub-categories from design and engineering of mechanisms, (design) engineering of medical devices or medical products and instruments, design and engineering of electronics, design & engineering of pneumatic or hydraulic systems, design and engineering of/for consumer products and numerous other specialties. DESIGNLORE provides comprehensive set of product engineering services taking the product from the initial idea to the manufacturing through all necessary design and engineering steps. Product engineering is the only engineering discipline that deals with both design and manufacturing aspects of a product.
  • MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Mechanical Engineering is an engineering discipline that involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines. DESIGNLORE Mechanical engineering addresses number of product requirements and desired functional goals from core principles of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy to manufacturing process capabilities, process specifics together with expertise in materials. Product mechanical engineering is customized for each specify product depending on particular filed and application. • CAE (COMPUTER AIDED ENGINEERING)

CAE Computer-Aided Engineering is the use of computer technology to aid in the design and engineering process by creating three dimensional 3D models and performing tasks such as analysis, simulation, diagnosis, and repair. There are many specific CAE analysis which are performed depending on particular product design goals and functional requirements while many are implemented in order to optimize design for manufacturing process. Special Analysis using CAE areas covered include: Stress analysis on components and assemblies using FEA (Finite Element Analysis); Thermal and fluid flow analysis Computational fluid dynamics (CFD); Kinematics; Mechanical event simulation (MES). Analysis tools for process simulation for operations such as casting, molding, and die press forming. Optimization of the product or process. In general, there are three phases in any computer-aided engineering CAE task: Pre-processing - defining the model (CAD modeling) Analysis solver (usually performed on high powered computers) Post-processing of results (using visualization tools) This cycle is iterated, often many times, either manually or with the use of commercial optimization software
  • PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS / Engineering

Professional Engineer is the term for registered or licensed engineers in some countries who are permitted to offer their professional services directly to the public. The term Professional Engineer and the actual practice of professional engineering is legally defined and protected by a government body. In some jurisdictions only registered or licensed Professional Engineers are permitted to use the title, or to practice Professional Engineering. The earmark that distinguishes a licensed/registered Professional Engineer is the authority to sign and seal or "stamp" engineering documents (reports, drawings, and calculations) for a study, estimate, design or analysis, thus taking legal responsibility for it. DESIGNLORE is a licensed engineering company, and is a registered holder of CoA (Certificate of Authorization) issued by the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario in accordance with the Professional Engineers Act and regulation No 942. and is thus allowed to offer and provide professional engineering services to the public. All engineering services are provided by licensed personnel.
  • CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Concept Development is the process of generating ideas and technical solutions, development of the more intricate systems and reiteration of the original ideas with the ultimate design goal and technical specifications in mind.  At DESIGNLORE we begin concept development early in the product design process addressing the majority of the design goals and specifications. Concept developed addresses mechanical aspect concurrently with the product style and aesthetics. By addressing both style and product aesthetics and technical aspect of the product early in the concept development stage we create fully feasible concepts.  Product ideas generated in brainstorm sessions are developed in continual improvement process by multi disciplinary team of members assembled and seamlessly integrated with the view of the specific project requirements.  Both mechanical solutions, preliminary engineering and Industrial Design activities take place until concept is defined and presented in the form of renderings which are ready for presentation to the client. From multiple proposed raw concepts which typically address the same product design goals but going in different design direction, the most appropriate raw concept is selected together with the client on design review meeting, The selected preferred Concept is than further refined into Final Concept . The end of Concept Development phase is acceptance and approval of the Final Concept renderings by client.  While there is common opinion that Concepts are not as valuable as final developed designs there is much work and planning required to set the product development and future product onto the right course. From preliminary planning and selection of manufacturing process over the engineering to preliminary selection of materials are all possibly key factors of your future product. Extensive research of both existing and similar product, market trends end user requirements all add to this list of important activities.
  • CONCEPT PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Concept Product development is the process of generating ideas and technical solutions, product development of the more intricate systems and reiteration of the original ideas with the ultimate design goal and technical specifications in mind. At DESIGNLORE we begin concept product development early in the product design process addressing the majority of the design goals and specifications. Concept developed addresses mechanical aspect concurrently with the product style and aesthetics. By addressing both style and product aesthetics and technical aspect of the product early in the concept product development stage we create fully feasible concepts. Product ideas generated in brainstorm sessions are developed in continual improvement process by multi disciplinary team of members assembled and seemlessly integrated with the view of the specific project requirements. Both mechanical solutions, preliminary engineering and Industrial Design activities take place until concept is defined and presented in the form of renderings which are ready for presentation to the client. At DESIGNLORE we provide all Concept Product development services necessary to successfully develop product including all specialty design activities without explicitly dividing them according to specialties. Concept Product development of a product may include various specialty Conceptual Product development activities addressing ergonomic, design of internal mechanism, User Interface design and more.
  • CONCEPT GENERATION

Concept Generation is the process of creating concepts and generating ideas and technical solutions, performed as inseparable part of the process of Concept Development. While concept development refers to the phase consisting of number of activities, the concept generation is more specific activity resulting from various idea and solution generation processes and according to the inputs collected in the beginning of the concept development phase, and resulting in concept renderings and sketches. Quite often concept generation is used to describe complete and extensive Concept development process although Concept Generation refers to creation of more tangible results in form of renderings and concept sketches. None-the-less Concept Generation can not be performed without other Concept development activities and as such in our view both expressions may be used interchangeably.
  • CONCEPT SKETCH, NAPKIN SKETCH

A napkin sketch is a quick drawing of a product idea. Napkin sketches are not very detailed nor accurate but are unsurpassed tool in communication. Although it sounds crude but napkin sketch is still as good as thousand words. DESIGNLORE has capability to develop idea which is described as vaguely as napkin sketch and take it all the way to the manufacturing. See also: Product Sketch
  • PRODUCT SKETCH PRODUCT SKETCHING

A product sketch is a quick drawing of a product idea. Product sketches important part of product development as it is practically only way to communicate early ideas, form and shape as well as function between designers and engineers and even clients. The product sketch is visual tool worth 1000 words. For many designers and engineers product sketch is part of thinking and creative process. Starting from blank paper ideas are built one on the top of the other each one triggering new ideas. Ultimately the best and the most refined ideas surface in product sketch. DESIGNLORE has creates number of product sketches during concept phase. Only few are selected for further refinement based on their artists and technical value
  • BRAINSKETCH, BRAIN SKETCH

Brain sketching (brain sketching) is a group creative method used by designers in order to create and explore number of ides. It is used in early phases of product development as part of brainstorming sessions. While all members of the design team generate sketches focusing on their proposed ideas and solutions to the problem, only few are selected for further development. As part of brain storming group of activities the brain sketching is confined or limited by technical parameters and allows full freedom. There are no bad brain sketches or ideas although many of those will never be used. Eventually DESIGNLORE team .will evaluate all ideas selecting only those which are feasible, and have potential of meeting desired design goals for further development.
  • CONCEPT DESIGN

Concept Design is the process of generating ideas and technical solutions, design of the more intricate systems and reiteration of the original ideas with the ultimate design goal and technical specifications in mind. At DESIGNLORE we begin concept design early in the product design process addressing the majority of the design goals and specifications. Extensive research of both existing and similar product, market trends end user requirements all add to this list of important activities. At DESIGNLORE we provide all Concept Design services necessary to successfully develop product including all specialty design activities without explicitly dividing them according to specialties. Concept Design of a product may include various specialty Conceptual design activities addressing ergonomic, design of internal mechanism, User Interface design and more.
  • DESIGN

DESIGN Design is used both as a noun and a verb. The term is often tied to the various applied arts and engineering (See design disciplines below). As a verb, "to design" refers to the process of originating and developing a plan for a product, structure, system, or component. In realm of product development, design is the process of converting a product need into plans for a manufacture-ready product. Design therefore can be further divided in: mechanical design industrial design but is often used as design engineering. By specialties design can be divided into additional sub-categories from design of mechanisms, enclosure design, packaging design, interface design, design for manufacture, ergonomic design, and numerous other specialties. At DESIGNLORE we provide all services necessary to successfully develop product including all specialty design activities without explicitly dividing them according to specialties. Thus design of a product may include for example enclosure design with ergonomic design, design of internal mechanism, User Interface design and design for assembly. Instead design activities are divided by main activities such as industrial design (ID) including form, aesthetics, consumer appeal, ergonomics, etc and mechanical design addressing functionality, mechanical aspects, assembly, manufacturability, serviceability etc. as well as any necessary mechanisms. The generic division of all design activities to : Industrial Design and · Mechanical Design and Engineering · so far was the simplest and most practical division used by DESIGNLORE. As a noun, "a design" is used for either the final solution (plan) or the result of implementing that plan in the form of the final product of a design process. At DESIGNLORE, we pride ourselves on being a balanced team of industrial designers and engineers where main focus is on engineering.
  • PROTOTYPE

A prototype is an original type, form, or instance of something serving as a typical example, basis, or standard for other things of the same category. The word derives from the Greek πρωτότυπον (prototypon), "archetype, original", neutral of πρωτότυπος (prototypos), "original, primitive", from πρώτος (protos), "first" + τύπος (typos), "impression”. In product development prototype refers to a product produced to demonstrate existing design. Since many manufacturing processes cannot be implemented for manufacturing of the prototypes (injection molding would be to expensive) they are often built using alternatives. During product development it is necessary to build prototypes necessary to either validate certain function or for further testing and required input. The prototypes are built as required and can be used for numerous purposes. DESIGNLORE provides full set of prototyping services relaying on number of suppliers in various industries.
  • FUNCTIONAL PROTOTYPE, WORKING PROTOTYPE

A functional prototype is fully functional prototype used to verify and validate design. Since number of manufacturing processes can not be used in building of the prototypes it is often necessary to make adequate material and process substitutes. (e.g. injection molded parts are often produced using rapid prototyping or CNC machining techniques.) Functional Prototype, beside same appearance as the finished product should have all function of the finished product. As such it is used to verify and validate the design and prior the design is released for manufacturing. DESIGNLORE provides prototyping services and builds prototypes for various purposes.
  • CLAY MODEL. (or PROTOTYPE)

Clay Model, Clay prototypes Clay Model is practically an appearance prototype, or appearance model, a physical representation of a product that closely simulates the look of a production product. Historically clay was preferred material used for building the appearance models. While many industries are still using the clay new more modern better and lower costs materials are used. The term is still in use to refer to appearance prototypes or appearance models although the materials are different. Clay Model typically does not function the way a production product would, if it has any functionality at all. Typically internal components do not exist, while all moving parts are fixed in their most preferred position. Clay Models are relatively simple, finished to look like the desired end product. If necessary clay model may have more specific features or elements crucial to describe certain specific function or property. Clay models or are often used to explore not only style and aesthetics of the product but some important features. DESIGNLORE provide our clients with appearance prototypes, form factor models , clay models for use in trade shows, focus groups, and internal reviews.
  • APPEARANCE MODEL, FORM STUDY PROTOTYPE /MODEL

An appearance prototype, or appearance model, is a physical representation of an product that closely simulates the look of a production product. An appearance prototype typically does not function the way a production product would, if it has any functionality at all. Typically internal components do not exist, while all moving parts are fixed in their most preferred position. This type of Appearance prototype / Form Study model will allow designers to explore the basic size, look and feel of a product without simulating the actual function or exact visual appearance of the product. They can help assess ergonomic factors and provide insight into visual aspects of the product's final form. Form Study Prototypes are often hand-carved or machined models from easily sculpted, inexpensive materials (e.g., urethane foam), without representing the intended color, finish, or texture. Due to the materials used, these models are intended for internal decision making and are generally not durable enough or suitable for use by representative users or consumers. Furthermore materials used for Appearance Model / Appearance Prototype, Form Study Prototype, Form Study Model can be made using wood, foam, clay or other prototyping materials. In the past appearance prototypes are mostly made out of clay and thus they are still referred to as Clay models. Appearance prototypes are relatively simple, finished and painted (if required) to look like the desired end product. If necessary appearance prototypes may have more specific features or elements crucial to describe particular function or property. Appearance prototypes are often used to explore not only style and aesthetics of the product but some important features. In fast past environments Rapid Prototype technologies are often used to build appearance prototypes early in product development.. Outside surfaces of the product being developed are used while internal elements and components are omitted. Since appearance prototypes (Clay Models) are build 'for show' they are typically fragile and should be handled with care. DESIGNLORE often provides our clients with appearance prototypes, form factor models for use in trade shows, focus groups, and internal reviews. These prototypes are often critical components in the design decision-making process.
  • RAPID PROTOTYPING, RAPID PROTOTYPES

Rapid prototyping is the automatic construction of physical objects using solid free form fabrication. The first techniques for rapid prototyping became available in the late 1980s and were used to produce models and prototype parts. Today, they are used for a much wider range of applications and are even used to manufacture production quality parts in relatively small numbers. Some sculptors use the technology to produce complex shapes for fine arts exhibitions. Rapid prototyping takes virtual designs from computer aided design (CAD) or animation modeling software, transforms them into thin, virtual, horizontal cross-sections and then creates each cross-section in physical space, one after the next until the model is finished. Rapid prototyping takes virtual designs from computer aided design (CAD) or animation modeling software, transforms them into thin, virtual, horizontal cross-sections and then creates each cross-section in physical space, one after the next until the model is finished. Rapid prototyping takes virtual designs from computer aided design (CAD) or animation modeling software, transforms them into thin, virtual, horizontal cross-sections and then creates each cross-section in physical space, one after the next until the model is finished. DESIGNLORE provides full set of rapid prototyping services relaying on number of suppliers in various industries. The most appropriate rapid prototyping process (SLA, SLS, FDM, 3DP, LOM) or alternative more conventional techniques are selected according to particular product/ component needs and clients application and requirements.
  • COLOR STUDY, COLOR SCHEME

A product color study is an exercise in which a product is shown in a variety of color scheme options. This is a comparative process intended to enable the client and his marketing people select color schemes appropriate for the desired use of the product and suitable for target user / market. The importance of color study and resulting color scheme can not be emphasized enough. The wrong color scheme can make a product seem awkward or out of place in its target market, while the right colors can increase sales. At DESIGNLORE we often provide our clients with color studies in the form of product renderings or sketches. Typically we propose color scheme(s) that is the most suitable for the market and end user based on our knowledge of color theory, product development experience and specific of the product end user, market and client's desired goals. Final color scheme(s) may be altered based on final product and industry standards after functional prototypes are built.
  • FUNCTIONAL APPEARANCE MODELS

A functional appearance models are not really a prototype since they can not be used to verify and validate design and can not be easily transferred into mass production. Although outside form and shape are the same as finished product, the manufacturing process and materials used may defer from the finished product so much that said Functional Appearance Models may be regarded as very similar but separate products. They may not have full functionality but it is necessary that form and shape are accurately presented. (E.g. software based products often do not have developed software necessary for the full function) The functionality of the Functional Appearance Models (e.g. moving components may be achieved using alternative methods as long as the outside appearance is not affected) is typically reduced. Functional appearance models are often used for trade shows and focus groups. One may wonder who would require Fully Functional Appearance model ? As a matter of fact number of clients require tool to communicate future product and design intent to investors, partners etc. Such are designed in the view of the specific client need and only addressing limited number of design features. Design features, particularly those related to assembly, manufacturing, and internal components are reduced in order to save time and reduce design effort. Buy limiting design effort to only outside and necessary function (e.g. motion but without required strength) Functional Appearance Models are obtained much faster and for much less. Functional appearance models are good tool to present the product design to the investors and possibly even sell the product and product idea to the companies in the similar business. Functional Appearance Models convey the product idea and design intent much better than renderings particularly if the product idea is highly dependant on motion and functionality that can not be easily communicated using renderings. Functional Appearance Models may be used to verified some of the design features although it should be clear that it will be necessary to revisit the design addressing the "inside" of the product and performing proper design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) if decision is to continue with the manufacturing of the product. DESIGNLORE provides scalable and flexible services addressing particular needs of their clients. At DESIGNLORE we will optimize the level of detail and design effort necessary to achieve the desired results allowing our clients to manage initial investments and plan progress off the product.
  • VISUAL MODEL

An Visual Model or Visual Prototype, is nothing else but appearance model, is a physical representation of an product that closely simulates the look of a production product finished to better represent the final colors and finishes. Visual Model or (Visual Prototype) does not function the way a production product would, if it has any functionality at all. Typically internal components do not exist, while all moving parts are fixed in their most preferred position. This type of Visual allows designers to explore the basic size, look and feel of a product without simulating the actual function or exact visual appearance of the product. They can help assess ergonomic factors and provide insight into visual aspects of the product's final form. Visual Models (Visual Prototypes) are often hand-carved or machined models from easily sculpted, inexpensive materials (e.g., urethane foam, wood plastics). Visual Models (Visual Prototypes) are relatively simple, finished and painted (if required) to look like the desired end product. In fast past environments Rapid Prototype technologies are often used to build appearance prototypes early in product development.. Outside surfaces of the product being developed are used while internal elements and components are omitted. Paints and finishes can be applied as required. DESIGNLORE often provides our clients with Visual Model or Visual Prototypes, for use in trade shows, focus groups, and internal reviews. These prototypes are often critical components in the design decision-making process. See also: Clay Model, Ergonomic Product Design, Functional Appearance Prototype, visual prototype
  • MOCK-UPS, PROOF OF PRINCIPLE PROTOTYPE / MODEL, PROOF OF CONCEPT PROTOTYPES, BREADBOARD

During product development it is often necessary to isolate particular system, subsystem, mechanism and build such a model to verify design intent or conceptual solution. For this purpose designers and engineers often build various Mock-Ups, Proof of Principle prototypes, or Proof of Concept prototypes often referred to as Breadboard. Proof of principle (proof-of-principle), often referred to as proof of concept is term often used for various mock-up, partial prototypes used during the product development process. It is often necessary to verify and validate the assumptions made before the product development process is completed by means of building such proof of principle, or proof of concept prototypes or mock-ups which will be used in suitable tests. This type of prototypes or models is used to test only certain aspect without attempting to exactly simulate neither visual appearance, nor materials or manufacturing process. Proof of principle prototypes, proof of concept, and breadboard prototypes are used to "prove" out a potential design approach such as specific motion, mechanism, etc. or to select which design options will work the best, or if further development and testing is necessary. For the same purpose designers build mock-ups or proof of concepts prototypes (proof of principle prototypes) and models expecting only to obtain sufficiently conclusive results necessary to make further design decisions. Many such Mock-Ups, Proof-of-Principle or Proof-of-Concept prototypes and models can be designed for the specific purpose and not even resemble the design which will be implemented in the product. Quite often Mock-Ups, Proof-of-Principle or Proof-of-Concept prototypes are scaled down (or up) and may be exploded in order to simply the process. DESIGNLORE provides full set of prototyping services including design Mock-Ups, Proof-of-Principle or Proof-of-Concept prototypes and models.
  • BRAIN STORMING / APPLIED IMAGINATION

Brainstorming is a group creativity technique designed to generate a large number of ideas for the solution of a problem. The method was first popularized in the late 1930s by Alex Faickney Osborn in a book called Applied Imagination. Osborn proposed that groups could double their creative output with brainstorming. The goal of a brainstorming exercise is to generate a large quantity of ideas and solutions in a relatively short period of time. Group setting stimulates generation of ideas among members simply by causing associative and reflective thinking. DESIGNLORE pays great attention to the importance of creating appropriate multi-disciplinary team for brainstorming sessions. The effectiveness of the brain storming session will highly depend abundance of ideas created but in the same time moderated by experience and particular skill set and knowledge of the participants. Brainstorming is non critical exercise that encourages uninhibited thought. Typically brain storming sessions are executed in two independent occasions spaced apart enough to stimulate relaxed after time creative process. All ideas from two sessions are than evaluated in relaxed setting where the most appropriate ideas are selected while bad and silly ideas are not criticized. Brainstorming can be used together with the brain sketching or other idea generation methods.
  • CREATIVE SESSION

A creative session is a meeting specifically designed for the purpose of exploring new creative ideas with in the view of the desired goals and future product specifications. Creative sessions can be brain sketching, brain storming or discussion and analysis of the proposed ideas and design direction. At DESIGNLORE we often start projects by inviting the client to join us in our creative sessions. We believe that this approach helps jumps tart the project and let us get more familiar with all requirements and opportunities, early in the project. Alternatively for well defined projects where all design goals and preliminary product specifications are well defined by client we will start the project ideation and exchange the ideas with the client using pre prepared concept sketches in the Creative Session meeting often referred to Preliminary Design Review Meeting or Initial Design Review meeting.
  • COMMODITIZATION, COMMODIFICATION

Commodification (or commoditization) is the transformation of goods and services (or things that may not normally be regarded as goods or services) into a commodity. Product development industry uses the “Commoditization” to depict change of position of your product when your product is the same or have many similarities to everyone else's product and/or if your product becomes reverse engineered, emulated, or becomes target for knock-offs industry. If your product is for mass consumer use, its appeal, price and brand are main factors which will either distinguish your product or put you in the price battle with competitors. While there is not golden rule for success products designed with great attention to design help companies create recognizable brand setting the stage to offer higher value products and avoiding commoditization. Innovation and Design are what leading companies (E.g. Apple) do to avoid sliding into commoditization. Innovation and design help increase the value of the product.
  • PRODUCT DESIGN

Product Design is used both as a noun and a verb. The Product Design term is often tied to the various industrial and engineering activities necessary to design product. As a verb, product design refers to the process of originating and developing a plan for a product, structure, system, or component. In product development world, the product design is the process of generating product models and documentation from the initial design input. Product Design therefore can not be separated from product mechanical design, product industrial design and product engineering By specialties product design can be divided into additional sub-categories from design of mechanisms, enclosure design, packaging design, interface design, design for manufacture, ergonomic design, and numerous other specialties. At DESIGNLORE we provide all product design services necessary to successfully develop product including all specialty design activities without explicitly dividing them according to specialties. Thus design of a product may include for example enclosure design with ergonomic design, design of internal mechanism, User Interface design and design for assembly. As a noun, "product design" is used for either the final product solution (plan) or the result of implementing that plan in the form of the final product of a product design process. Typical usage of the term Product Design represents finished Design of the Product At DESIGNLORE, we pride ourselves on optimizing Product Design Process and selecting the most efficient design team for every specific product development project.
  • INITIAL DESIGN REVIEW MEETING, (PRELIMINARY DRM)

Initial Design Review Meeting is Preliminary meeting where DESIGNLORE team members and client can exchange initial ideas and/or product design goals early in the concept development phase. While the Initial Design Review Meeting is Creative session in very relaxed and creative setting the prerequisite is knowledge of the future product goals. DESIGNLORE prepares both some preliminary idea to bounce off as well as questions regarding the future product. The client in the other hand has opportunity to refine design goals, their ideas as well as to affect proposed design directions. For more sensitive projects DESIGNLORE will isolate 'mission critical features / steps or components and propose the plan of the attack. Quite often project plan can be discussed with the client. The Initial Design Review Meeting or Preliminary Design review Meeting is the best time to isolate any uncertainties, plan for R&D activities and next design and engineering steps.
  • DESIGN REVIEW MEETING (DRM), CRITICAL DESIGN MEETING (CDM), FINAL DESIGN (REVIEW) MEETING

Design Review Meeting is meeting between DESIGNLORE and client where proposed design ideas and technical solutions are reviewed and discussed. It is crucial element of design process as well as progress reporting. Number of Design Review Meetings is proposed on the begin of the project and depends on level of complexity and number of uncertainties on the project. Typically there are 1-2 Design Review Meetings although the number is not limited. Critical Design review meetings are usually set before Design Development is frozen and prior to start of Detailing phase and preparation of technical documentation and fabrication drawings. Additional Critical Design Meetings and Design Review Meetings may be set by client in order to enable proper communication between different teams / departments and to provide interface between them. Final Design review Meeting is set for the end of the project and review of the final deliverables.
  • RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, R&D

The phrase research and development (also R and D or, more often, R&D), according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, refers to "creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of human, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications. New product design and development is more than often a crucial factor in the survival of a company. In an industry that is fast changing, firms must continually revise their design and range of products. This is necessary due to continuous technology change and development as well as other competitors and the changing preference of customers. R&D activities are often required during product development process. While in many cases research and development is very technical and is used to address and solve various technical issues particularly for the product systems, function and performance of the new and not well explored solutions, than research and development together with testing is used as a tool to investigate various proposed solutions or design concepts. In the very beginning designers perform research of the market and similar products to determine the most optimal design and engineering approach as well as establish the standards for the new product. DESIGNLORE provides various Research and Development activities from scientific testing, exploration and verification of potential design solutions, to research of existing and similar products as part of product concept and product market research.
  • CAD, Computer Aided Design

CAD Computer-Aided Design is the use of computer technology to aid in the design and drafting (technical drawing and engineering drawing) of a parts, components, subassemblies of the product . Furthermore high end software used by DESIGNLORE enable us to accurately design mechanisms, verify assembly features and whole products prior to building of the verification or functional prototypes. It is both a visual and symbol-based method of communication whose conventions are particular to a specific technical field. Furthermore communication with the suppliers is significantly improved by communicating using standardized 3D file formats such as IGES, STEP, STL etc. Furthermore CAD software is used to create 3D models of components and assemblies, photo realists renderings, verify design and to create technical drawings. drawings a CAD is used to develop photo-realistic renderings by applying life-like material textures and colors to the various parts of the model. CAD models can be used to build prototypes of products. Once all of the details are designed and optimized, the optimized CAD is used to make the final manufactured product.
  • CAD Modeling, Computer Aided Modeling

CAD Modeling, (Computer-Aided Design) Modeling CAD Modeling is the use of computer technology as aid in the design and drafting process by creating three dimensional 3D models. The crucial design element of CAD design is modeling of the components and parts of the system, which for some sophisticated parts (such as injection molded plastic parts) is almost impossible to describe in conventional 2D techniques. Such parts are modeled to high level of accuracy and is exported to electronic file formats than used to make injection molding tools. CAD modeling of the sophisticated parts often require CAD surfacing as special discipline enabling designers to create aesthetically pleasing organic shapes. Even the items that are off shelf (buy items) (switches, motors, etc) are modeled in order to complete the design and engineering effort by providing the most efficient internal layout, mounting features, as well as any necessary assembly or service requirements. Some low end CAD software used to create 3D models of components and assemblies may have limitations. DESIGNLORE uses only high end CAD software enabling very accurate models and providing lots of design freedom.
  • CAD Drafting, CADD, Computer Aided Design & Drafting

CAD Drafting is the use of computer technology to aid in the drafting process by creating 2D drawings (fabrication drawings) based on three dimensional CAD models. Most of high end software allow for parametric changes of the models and drawings. Never the less technical drawings are very important part in manufacturing of any product particularly considering the manufacturing tolerances and manufacturing process. In many events features for CAD models may be created in different manner and reference differently than required for technical fabrication drawings. For parts and components which are communicated electronically with suppliers it is advisable to have appropriate fabrication to communicate tolerances, quality Inspection parameters and other parameters which can not be explained using universal 3D file formats such as E.g. paint color etc.) DESIGNLORE pays high attention to value of the technical and fabrication drawings using it as final inspection of the design and proposed manufacturing process prior to release for prototyping or manufacturing.
  • AESTHETICS

Aesthetics or esthetics (also spelled æsthetics) is commonly known as the study of sensory or sensory-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature. In product development meaning of aesthetics is typically short for product aesthetics and is related to product aesthetics as combination of overall product style, product artistic values, user interface and ergonomic parameters. While aesthetics as a philosophical concept in art deals with the notion of beauty, in product development aesthetics deals with both appearance and functionality of the product. It is obvious that certain industrial products may not be the most eye catchy in the living room environment but the elegance of technical solution together with the functionality will definitely cause pleasurable sensory and emotional experience. Product aesthetics is very specific for particular design goal and is highly dependant on product environment, user and market. Products aesthetics are often referred to market or end user specifics, such as feminine, sport, technical or futuristic etc.. The main goal of product design and styling is to match an appropriate aesthetic with the target consumer and required performance.

  • PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Product Development is process of developing product from the initial idea or initial product specification to fully functional prototype or ready for manufacturing. Product development process consists of various product design and product engineering activities and is often divided in several phases Concept development, Detailed Product Development (Development) and Product Detailing Product Development should not be taken as single process but as synergy of multiple processes and various design and engineering activities. Product Development therefore can not be separated from product mechanical design, product industrial design and product engineering. In product development world, the product development is the process of generating product models from the initial design input. By specialties product development can be divided into additional sub-categories from development of mechanisms, development of internal components, development of electronics, development of enclosure, development of pneumatic or hydraulic systems, and numerous other specialties. At DESIGNLORE we provide all product development services and all specialty development activities without explicitly dividing them according to specialties. Thus product development may include for example enclosure development together with development of internal components and necessary development of the structure. Furthermore at DESIGNLORE, we pride ourselves in optimizing Product Development Process and selecting the most efficient product development path for every specific product, project.

  • BUSINESS PLAN

A business plan for a Product-Based business are very similar but does have several differences from basic Business plan. DESIGNLORE is engineering company and does not offer assistance with business plan although number technical and product specific questions will be raised during initial consultations and product development process. While your company, start-up business or entrepreneurship is encouraged to create appropriate business plan we feel that some of the questions we will raise during initial consultations and early in concept development phase will help you and your company narrow your product desires, goals and focus on the most appropriate product. Among those you will probably have to understand and plan your initial manufacturing volumes, planned retail price, manufacturing costs, end user characteristics, market size, elements that differentiate your product from your competitors, knowledge of competition or similar products etc.. DESIGNLORE will help start-ups, inventor-entrepreneurs, and established companies perform the appropriate development in the early stages of a project. Furthermore DESIGNLORE will customize development process allowing you /your company manage number of questions. Quite often DESIGNLORE will prepare renderings of the product that could be used for meetings with investors and marketing people. Armed with a rendering, you can perform preliminary market research to ensure the product pricing and features are right.
